The Dead Normality: Killing reality

27/01/10  ||  Smalley

Yes, their band name’s crappy, but The Dead Normality’s music fortunately doesn’t tread that same path; “Killing reality” is surprisingly good for being just a debut EP, made up of nothing but five tracks, 21 minutes total of relentlessly high-energy, well-made death/thrash.

Both the solos and the drumming are very good, with a good guitar sound that isn’t too clean or processed-sounding, but not too rough either, perfectly suiting the music. The semi-growling vocals by Richard de Neve are just passable, but not bad at all either, so it doesn’t take much away from the record.

There’s some stuff on their Metal Archives page about how Dead Normality’s lyrics are about “the horrors and heroes of World War II”, but you’ll be too busy headbanging to remember the fallen here (no offense to the fallen or Tom Angelripper).

Yes, there’s pretty much zero sound variety here, just basically heavy, heavy, and more heavy, but when they do it well, who’s complaining? For any future album (which I would be interested in hearing), Dead Normality should probably calm things down a bit, give their music a few quieter moments so we don’t get burned out by the constant noise, but that works out fine for the shorter length of this EP.

I’m serious guys, this is genuinely good shit here; GD readers, check ‘em out, and Dead Normality, keep up the good work!
